Project: ICONOSTASIS, the Monastery Chapel of the Contemplatives of St Joseph
This complex Iconostasis screen was commissioned for the private chapel of the Contemplatives of Saint Joseph, South San Francisco, CA, for the celebration of the Byzantine Divine Liturgy. The large screen was completely designed, fabricated, and installed by me, and I also painted all the built-in icons. The screen was made of oak, birch, pine, and hardwoods. Inspired by medieval 13th century Rood Screens, my iconostasis is designed to have lots of open spaces and carved and cut latticework, so as to provide the small chapel a lot of porous visibility between the sanctuary side and the laity side. The central arch and Royal Doors create a circle in space, to mirror the halo of Mary on the rear wall mural, and the mandorla of the Risen Christ panel above the altar.
